Urban Oasis - Getting the Paintbrushes Ready!
On Friday, January 11th, I had the privilege of having access to the Alondra Park Nature Sanctuary... this is a L.A.County / El Camino College, Joint Project... a protected habitat where the birds and water fowl can rest and recouperate while migrating, or make their nests for breeding. It is a protected area, with a fence and locked gate so that the plants and native lizards can grow and be safe from being trampled.
There are teams of students from El Camino College who take part in the plant restoration project, and members of the community, bird lovers, and the surrounding areas are encouraged to participate in the enjoyment and protection of this urban oasis.
Plans are in the works for the Island to be opened on a scheduled basis, so that the public can view and explore and enjoy the island, and get a "birds eye view" of the simple beauty. As a local artist, I have been enjoying the views of the island for years... I have taken my children around the "duck pond" and conducted area paint and play sessions... Now having an opportunity to take my students onto the island as part of my regular art classes will be a possiblity.
There will also be guided bird walks and plant restoration programs in the future. Once available, I will provide a link to the calendar and let you know when I get my art lessons scheduled. I hope that in the meantime, you will explore and enjoy some of the other native and urban restored habitats that are already in existence.
Once a month I will be hitting the great outdoors, taking along my paint box... you are welcome to join me and take a class, or bring your art supplies and paint along with me... call for details.
